This
book includes the latest information and understanding on how to
successfully apply instrumented technology to the protection of
people, and for the first time ever, extends those systems,
processes and concepts to include the protection of corporate
assets and our shared environment. With its focus on "what to do,"
users learn not only what the IEC 61511 says, but most
importantly what organizations need to do and how it
should do it.

This book is a "how-to" guide that establishes a framework for designing and
running safe and reliable process engineering systems. It clarifies the
essential role of process engineers, plant operators, and facility managers who
are responsible for the safe and reliable design of these instrumented systems.
By walking the reader through a projects life cycle, engineering, maintenance,
and operations, the information allows users to easily focus on their
responsibilities and duties.

This book provides a comprehensive explanation of when, why, and how to specify, design, install,
validate, operate and maintain process industry protection systems. Far more
than a one time read, this book will undoubtly become an often used engineer's
reference guide.

The
IPS book stresses the importance of the operating environment and the
effectiveness of the mechanical integrity program on the equipment
failure rate. These factors can be significant contributors to
the observed PFD . The predicted PFD is a theoretical
value. The observed PFD is the real thing. The IPS Book
provides example metrics for assessing the performance of instrumented
protective systems in the
process industry.

I
have found this book interesting in its own merits and will recommend
it to colleagues. It is invaluable as a check list of what should not
be forgotten and, by doing this, I think the book has fulfilled its
purpose of providing the basics for new people who are unfamiliar with
the topic, filling in the holes of IEC 61511, and
providing some practical guidance on the subject.

The
physical allocation of protective functions to the various systems
requires careful consideration of the long-term operation and
maintenance costs of the systems. This IPS book tackles this issue
aswell as separation of the BPCS, SIS, and other
IPS.
